work holiday party

Holiday season is here and in full force, meaning your work holiday party might be just around the corner. Company holiday parties are interesting, to say the least. They’re a great time to acquaint with coworkers in a casual setting, but there’s also this awkward line between having fun, and having real fun.

Do I order another drink?

Is this dress too short?

How much small talk will this party involve?

All of your questions are completely valid, and we’re here to answer them. We’re covering exactly what not to do at your company holiday party this year. Keep reading to find out!

Work Holiday Party Etiquette

Here are 5 things to avoid doing at your holiday work party this year:

1. Get wasted

The most classic rule of all time: don’t get wasted at your office holiday party.

As tempting as it is to throw those tequila shots back with Becky from marketing, too many drinks might not lead to a pretty sight.

Avoid falling over, getting messy, puking, and being “that girl”, by capping yourself to a 2 drink maximum.

No fun, we know. But, your future self will thank you when you roll into the office Monday morning, without a trace of severe post-intoxication in sight.

2. Overshare

Sometimes when you get chatting with your coworkers in a comfortable setting (and you’re a drink or so deep), you might start to reveal a bit more than you usually do.

Maybe you want to tell your boss how much you despise the new vision for the team, or tell your coworkers how annoying you think the new guy is. Whatever it may be, avoid oversharing and expressing how you really feel at these parties. Save the honesty for a more sober (and filtered) environment.

3. Wear What You Would Wear for Your BFF’s Bachelorette

Before you release your inner Sasha Fierce; ready to dominate this work party with a sexy cut out dress, remember this is a “work” party after all.

Try opting in for something that’s work friendly, but also chic. Fitted dresses that have a high neckline, maxi dresses with a moderate slit, and fun sequins are a great way to still feel stylish while following the office dress code.

4. Arrive Empty Handed

Be sure not to arrive empty handed if your boss is hosting the party at his or her house. Bring a bottle of wine, some chocolate, or anything that would pass as a safe and neutral gift.

A little thought goes a long way, so don’t stress too hard about what to bring.

(Pssst – is the thought of buying another gift stressing you out? Check out our article on how to spend less this holiday season when you’re on a budget!)

5. Hook Up

If you’ve been eyeing the cute guy in Accounting and you’re hitting it off at the party, maybe give it some thought before you decide to show a little P.D.A.

Eyes are everywhere at these holiday parties, and one scandalous move can have rumors spread across the office like wildfire by Monday.

So, between not drinking, avoiding wearing your fave outfits, and not making eye contact with your crush — it’s fair to say you’re in for a good night. đŸ˜‰ Cheers to the company holiday party! (You’ll need more wine once you get home.)
