How to Be More Creative: 7 Ways to Boost Your Creativity and Find Inspiration

How to Be More Creative - How to Become a More Creative Person

As children, we often led our lives with creativity. Our imagination was our compass, never leading us astray. We thought up the most intricate stories and designed the most phenomenal structures in our minds  – defying the laws of gravity, physics, or any naysayer that got in our way.

But somewhere along our paths, adulthood happened. We began to rely less on imagination and more on practicality.

The result?

A life absent of the vibrant creativity that now feels like a distant memory.

How do I become a more creative person? How do I develop strong creativity skills like I used to have when I was younger? What things do I need to do more (or less of) to reignite my creativity flame?

If you’ve asked yourself these questions, you’re in the right spot. Today, we’re covering 7 ways to rekindle your creative spark. From immersing yourself in new hobbies to spending more time with mother nature, here’s how to become a more creative person today.

1. Start identifying as a creative

“I’m just not a creative person.”

A common statement used far too many times by those who haven’t quite connected with their art. But the truth is, we’re all creative people

Just because you’re not creating art like Picasso or considered a musical genius like Mozart – doesn’t mean you’re not creative.

The first step to boosting your creativity is to start identifying as a creative. The more you tell yourself that you’re an artistic person with great creative skills, the more you’ll believe it.

Sometimes our creativity skills need a bit of fine-tuning after collecting dust on the shelf for so long – but all that means is that we need to brush up on those gifts.

We are all inherently creative – we just happen to express that creativity in different manners.

2. Immerse yourself in new creative hobbies

Improving your creativity skills means challenging your mind and thinking outside of the box. And one of the best ways to think critically is to immerse yourself in new creative hobbies.

Traditional artistic hobbies like painting, dancing, pottery, and singing are all great places to start, but nowadays, in the digital world, we have access to take everyday creative hobbies to the next level – with just the click of a button.

3. Spend more time in nature

An underrated way to start feeling more creative is to spend some time with Mother Nature, herself. Making an active effort to unplug and spend time outdoors is not only great for your mind, body, and soul – but it’s an immediate way to feel a spark of creative inspiration.

Take a look around you, and you’ll start to realize that you’re living in a painting. The beautifully painted canvas of the sky, the way the branches of the tree so precisely shade the chipmunk resting below.

Earth itself is a masterpiece. And days you’re feeling disconnected from your creative side is likely also a sign that it’s time to get outside and become one with nature.

4. Don’t be afraid to try

The worst thing we can do to our creative souls is hold ourselves back. And more often than not, we do. We allow fear to prevent us from living wholly, presently, and at peace. We spend more time worrying about what other people think than what our soul yearns for.

Breaking into your most creative self, requires you to be vulnerable and open to the unfamiliar.

Rather than fearing how you’ll “look” if you try something new, focus less on perfection and more on the process. Being a creative person requires you to learn and try new things, even if that’s outside of your comfort zone.

So the fear you have of trying that ballet class (even though you’ve always wanted to try)? Time to face it head-on. The worry you have of posting your favorite outfits on social media because of what your friends might think? Don’t let it phase you.

Step into a whole new creative version of yourself, and listen to what your inner self is really craving.

5. Stop comparing yourself

“Comparison is the thief of joy.” -Teddy Roosevelt

And that’s for sure.

As you start to take on new creative hobbies, it’s important to stop comparing yourself to what other people are doing around you. Our creativity is unique to us and us alone. There is no one else out there with the same creativity or delivery as you. So instead of tweaking what you want to bring to the world in hopes of playing it safe or conforming, instead, stop comparing and be your own individual.

Seek inspiration from others, but don’t replicate. Be open to feedback, but don’t critically compare.

Boosting your creativity is a lifelong process that requires you to feel comfortable and confident in your creative ability.

6. Schedule the time

When we’re younger, scheduled art or music class in school is mandatory. We have a set curriculum that ensures we make time for the arts on a weekly or daily basis.

But as we get older, and enter into the workforce – those blocks of time for creativity are no longer planned for us. And as a result, we often forget about it.

Make time in your calendar to get creative. Sign up for a weekly pottery class, or dedicate 30 minutes every morning to writing poetry. Whatever your art is, make time.

Giving yourself a schedule to “get creative” allows you to go deep into your creative side, without the worry or feeling that you should be doing something else.

7. Problem solve

Developing better creativity skills isn’t just about becoming a more artistic person, but also using the skillset to creatively solve problems.

When you run into a problem, what’s your usual course of action? Do you seek someone else’s help immediately, or do you attempt to solve the problem yourself?

Allowing yourself the chance to solve problems on your own before you consult others, requires you to be resourceful. This is a skill in creative thinking that encourages you to think outside of the box and get from point A to point B with whatever information or resources you’re given.

Working on your problem-solving skills is a great way to improve your creativity, and become an overall more creative person.
